Oregano oil is a powerful antibiotic with antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. It is full of antioxidants and can be used to treat infections.
You know that question “If you were put on a deserted island for a year what would you bring?” Oregano would be on my list! This is one oil I always have on hand but don’t need that often. Let me explain.
Oregano can kill off viral and bacterial infections and boosts the immune system. I only break out oregano oil when we are sick and as a rule we only use it 10 days like you would with a round of antibiotics because it is a natural medicine. Oregano oil has been proven to be just as effective, if not more effective than prescribed antibiotics.
So what’s the problem with antibiotics? They are great in emergency situations and I’m glad to have them in time of crisis BUT they are way overused today and it’s obvious. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria causing the infection but they also kill the good bacteria that we need for optimal health. Without this good bacteria we can’t digest food properly which leads us to deficiencies and weaken immune systems. The number one cause of a leaky gut is overuse of antibiotics. The gut is the brain of the immune system and when it’s unhealthy we are unhealthy. Taking probiotics or adding fermented foods into your diet can help replace good bacteria in the gut.
Top uses for oregano oil:
Viral and bacterial infections
Strep throat and tonsillitis
Athletes foot and nail fungus
Warts and Canker Sores
Boost Immune System
Oregano oil can be used 4 different ways.
The first way is internally. You should also take this in a veggie capsule because it’s a hot oil and can burn your mouth. Always consult with a doctor before taking oils internally. Personally, in my family, we only take oregano when we are sick. We take 3 capsules a day with 2 drops in each. My husband had strep throat several times in the beginning of our marriage and after a few rounds of antibiotics I decided I wanted to figure out how to heal strep throat naturally. I started researching and I kept coming across oregano oil so we decided to give it a try. He went to the doctor and he was diagnosed with strep throat and instead of taking antibiotics we did oregano oil 3 times a day for 10 days and he got better! Because his body fought it off naturally he has not had strep throat sense!
Oregano oil can also be used topically. It should always be diluted because it’s a hot oil and can burn the skin. I made a roller bottle with 20 drops oregano essential oil and the rest fractionated coconut oil. When my husband had strep throat we rubbed this on his glands. You can also apply to the bottom of your feet to boost the immune system. You can apply it around the outside of the ears to help with ear infections. You can use it topically on toe fungus and athletes foot.
If you want your house to smell like an Italian restaurant you can diffuse oregano oil! Whether you like the smell or not diffusing oregano oil does have great benefits for your health. It can kill cold and flu germs and it is good for respiratory infections.
You can also use oregano oil for cooking. Because it’s so powerful I always suggest doing the “toothpick drop”. One drop could be too much, depending on your tastebuds. I take a toothpick and dip it in the oil and then stir that into a pot of spaghetti sauce or in my soup. It adds delicious flavor and health benefits.
Have you used oregano oil before? If so what did you use it for and how? I would love to hear from you!
