“What are your favorite bedtime essential oil blends?”

If I only had a dollar for every time someone asked me that, I would be sitting on a beach right now with my toes in the sand and no cares in the world! Since that didn’t happen, I decided to write a post on it instead. 😉

I’m one of those people who wishes sleep wasn’t a requirement. I would so much rather stay up and keep working (or playing) than call it a night.

But a cozy, calming bedtime routine has made winding down so much easier for me, and a few good essential oils are a big part of that. Here’s how I use them.

A Simple Wind-Down Routine

You don’t need anything fancy to wind down at night. These are the little things that make the biggest difference for me:

  • Turn off screens about an hour before bed. All that blue light can make it harder to settle down.
  • Try to stick to a schedule. Going to bed around the same time every night really does help.
  • Take a warm bath with a few drops of lavender before bed. It’s the coziest way to relax.
  • Diffuse a calming blend in the bedroom while you get ready for bed.
  • Roll a diluted bedtime blend onto your wrists and the bottoms of your feet.
  • Spritz a little lavender pillow mist on your sheets for a soft, soothing scent.

My Favorite Essential Oils for Bedtime

  • Lavender: The classic for a reason. That soft, floral scent is the one I reach for when I just want to relax.
  • Frankincense: Warm, woodsy, and grounding. I love adding it to almost any relaxing blend.
  • Vetiver: Deep, earthy, and rich. A little goes a long way, but it’s wonderful for a cozy nighttime scent.
  • Cedarwood: Warm and woodsy. It’s so soothing at the end of a long day.

I also love the Serenity (restful) and Balance (grounding) blends when I want something already mixed and ready to go.

My Relaxing Bedtime Roller

Add the following to a 10 mL roller bottle:

  • 5 drops lavender
  • 4 drops frankincense
  • 3 drops Serenity
  • 3 drops Balance
  • 2 drops vetiver

Top it off with fractionated coconut oil and shake well. Roll it onto your wrists and the bottoms of your feet as part of your bedtime routine.

Bedtime Diffuser Blends to Try

If diffusing is more your speed, here are a few cozy blends I love to run while I wind down:

  • Sleepy Night: 3 drops Serenity, 2 drops frankincense, 1 drop vetiver.
  • Cozy and Calm: 3 drops lavender, 2 drops cedarwood.
  • Soft Evening: 2 drops lavender, 2 drops frankincense, 1 drop wild orange.

A little tip: diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes as you get ready for bed rather than running it all night long.

A Simple Pillow Mist

Add a few drops of lavender to a small spray bottle of water, shake, and lightly mist your sheets and pillows before bed. It’s such an easy way to make your whole bed feel cozy.

Variations

This roller is easy to make your own. I haven’t tried every version, but a lot of people love to:

  • Swap in Roman chamomile for an extra soft, sweet scent.
  • Add a little bergamot or marjoram for a calming, cozy note.
  • Use sandalwood in place of vetiver if you like a smoother, woodsy base.

Expert Tips

  • Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes before bed rather than all night.
  • A roller on the bottoms of the feet is my favorite way to use a bedtime blend.
  • Keep a pillow mist on your nightstand so it’s easy to reach.
  • Store your oils out of reach of children.

A Few Safety Tips

  • Dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.
  • Do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin.
  • For external use only, and keep oils out of reach of children.

The easiest ways are to diffuse a calming blend as you get ready for bed, or roll a diluted blend onto your wrists and the bottoms of your feet.

I’m just diving into EO and came across your site today. I’m LOVING it! And the fact that we share the same name. I’m old enough to be your mother, but a perpetual student. I subscribe to YL oils. Do you know the equivalents to Balance and Serenity? LOVING this website – thank you SO much. I have a younger friend who subscribes to DT and will recommend your site to her, as she wishes to learn more, also. Thank you.

Thank you so much! I am so glad you are loving my site and learning a lot. You can google balance and serenity to see what is in them, I don’t know the exact amount of drops of each oil though.
